General:
Perennial herb from a woody stem-base, rarely with very short rhizomes; stems erect, (20) 30-70 cm tall.
Leaves:
Basal, usually 5 to 10, ascending, mostly 5-10 cm long, palmately 3- (5-) parted, the divisions narrowly triangular, 3-cleft over half their length, the segments more or less 3-toothed, short appressed-hairy; stalks 9-21 cm long.
Flowers:
Inflorescence a (1-) 2- to 8-flowered, terminal cyme; flower stalks long soft-hairy; involucral bracts 3 to 7 (-9), leaf-like, stalked, similar to basal leaves; petals absent; sepals usually 5, petal-like, green to whitish, oblong to elliptic or egg-shaped, 5-15 mm long, 3-6 mm wide, silky-hairy on outside, smooth inside; stamens 50-75.
Fruits:
Achenes, numerous in a cylindric head on stalks 10-30 cm long, the achenes egg-shaped, 2-3 mm long, 1.5-2 mm wide, not winged, woolly-hairy; beaks bent back at tip, 0.5-1 mm long, hidden by hairs, smooth.

Habitat / Range

Dry grasslands, shrublands and forests in the steppe and montane zones; infrequent in BC east of the Coast-Cascade Mountains and N to 56degreeN; N to NT, E to NB and S to NJ, SD, MO and NM.
